Sergio Bittanti is a control scientist.
He is professor of Model Identification and Data Analysis at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). His inspired teaching and research activity has attracted the attention of many young scholars (more than 350 Master theses in engineering). His research interests are in system identification and control theory, with a number of application studies, particularly in the fields of transportation and energy. He is the author of many scientific papers, and the author or editor of several books.
This activity is witnessed by a multitude of publications, not to speak of his contribution to the organization of international conferences as member of their Program Committees.
In the Italian scientific community, he was the promoter of the initiatives that led to organization of the 18th IFAC World Congress IFAC 2011. The congress was held in Milano from August 28 to September 2, 2011, with a record number of participants, more than 2800 from 73 Countries.

In 2006, he masterminded and organized in Milano the conference for the 50th anniversary of Control Science in Italy.
He is active in the life of various scientific associations, in particular the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and he EUropean Control Association (EUCA). Within IFAC he served in the Council in the triennium 2002 – 2005, the triennium during which IFAC decided to assign to Italy the World Congress in 2011. He was also member of the Council in the triennium 2014 - 2017, as Chairman of the Executive Board, and, as such, one of the two Vice-Presidents of IFAC in that period.
For EUCA, he was Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Control
